During the first decade of the 1900's Annie Cameron received a significant sum of money from her inheritance from Walter Urquhart (see blog dated Oct 5). We have documents that tell us the precise amount of British pounds she received but determining its purchasing power in Chile is a bit speculative. Using data found in Verniory's book, I found the value of the following commodities, in 1895 (in 1895 £3 = $40 CP):
-1 hectare of cleared land ready for cultivation $160 CP (Chilean Pesos)
-House $500 CP
-Rent of 1 hectare per year $40 CP
Factually, Alexander Cameron received the allocated 40 hectares per settler upon his arrival. Additionally, Tanty Nunny informs me that Santa Catalina was around 60 hectares at the time of Alexanders death. So perhaps the speculative assumptions made in the table below are not to far from reality.

The picture that emerges is that Alexander and Annie Cameron were devout Christians and were industrious and hard workers. Annie's inheritance allowed them to make their settlement grow and allowed them to splurge on the education of their daughters. I presume most of you reading this blog will have choked at the concept of splurging on education, but it must be pointed out that the Cameron girls were raised in the early 1900's, in a time when it was commonly thought that educating females was a waste of money. Alexander and Annie managed to provide for the following education for their daughters:
-Mary Cameron obtained a Nursing degree from Colegio Adventista de Puiggari in Argentina (died 1919)
-Catherine Cameron, obtained a Teacher degree from Colegio Adventista de Chile (died 1927)
-Annie Cameron obtained a Nursing degree in the United States. I have not located the school from where she graduated.
-Colina Cameron obtained a Teacher degree from Colegio Adventista de Chile (died circa 1990)
Their son John became a farmer and did not seek higher education. My guess is that going to college was not even a choice for John.
It seems to me that Alexander and Annie Cameron led successful, contented lives and were incredibly progressive for their time.

Durante la primera década del 1900 Annie Cameron recibió una cantidad significativa de dinero de su herencia de Walter Urquhart (véase el blog con fecha del 5 de octubre). Tenemos documentos que nos indican la cantidad exacta que recibio en libras esterlinas pero la determinación de su poder adquisitivo en Chile es un poco especulativo. Usando los datos encontrados en el libro de Verniory, encontré el valor de las siguientes cosas, en 1895 (en 1895 £3 = $40 CP):

Casa $500 CP
Alquiler de 1 hectárea por un año $40 CP
Sabemos que Alexander Cameron recibió 40 hectáreas asignadas por ser colono. Además, Tanty Nunny me informa que Santa Catalina tenia alrededor 60 hectáreas cuando falleció Alexander. Quizás las ideas especulativas mostradas en la tabla abajo no están tan lejos de la realidad. (vease la tabla original en el Blog)
El cuadro que emerge es que Alexander y Annie Cameron eran cristianos devotos y eran trabajadores industriosos y duros. La herencia de Annie les permitió crecer su colonia, y ademas les permitió el lujo de educar a sus hijas. Presumo que la mayor parte de ustedes que estan leyendo este blog se habrá sorprendido en el concepto de "lujo de la educación", pero debe ser precisado que las hermanas Cameron se criaron en el 1900, en una época en que fue se creía comúnmente que la educación de hijas era una pérdida de dinero. Alexander y Annie pudieron proveer la siguente educación para sus hijas: -
Mary Cameron obtuvo un grado de de enfermera de Colegio Adventista de Puiggari en la Argentina (muerta 1919) -
Catherine Cameron, obtuvo el titulo de profesora de Colegio Adventista de Chile (muerta 1927) Annie Cameron obtuvo un grado de enfermera en los Estados Unidos. No he localizado la escuela de donde ella graduó. -
Colina Cameron obtuvo el titulo de profesora de Colegio Adventista de Chile (muerto circa 1990)
Su hijo John atendió el fundo y no consiguió una educación más alta. Mi conjetura es que ir a la universidad no era el incluso una opción para John.
Me parece que Alexander y Annie Cameron llevaron una vida contenta y eran increíblemente progresivos por su tiempo.
